Treating mental health disorders requires different forms of treatment where patients work with behavioral therapists to help manage their symptoms of anxiety, substance abuse, or other mental health disorders. There are several differences between partial hospitalization vs. day treatment programs and the role they play in the recovery process. A partial hospitalization program typically follows a residential program and gives patients several weeks to adjust to their new sober life.
At Arkview Recovery, we offer a full range of treatment programs to help men and women with every step toward their recovery goals. During treatment, patients will participate in a number of beneficial therapies in group and private settings where they will learn how to express their feelings in a healthy manner instead of turning to drugs or alcohol, or other negative behavior. Partial Hospitalization vs. Day Treatment Programs
A partial hospitalization program, or PHP, generally lasts 2-3 weeks, where patients spend 6-8 hours a day, 3-5 days a week, in group and individual therapy sessions. They return home each night with tasks to complete for the next therapy session. In order to advance to PHP, patients must have a stable and sober home environment that is conducive to their recovery.
A day treatment program, or intensive outpatient program, begins once patients complete a partial hospitalization program. They continue to live at home while decreasing the amount of time spent in therapy each week, depending on their individual progress. A day treatment program can last from 8-12 weeks. At the end of the week, therapists and medical staff discuss each patient’s progress and recommend moving forward or repeating a previous step.
At Arkview Recovery Center, we will review the difference between partial hospitalization vs. day treatment programs and any other questions you have about the recovery process. We keep you and your family updated with your progress and do everything we can to ensure you continue to advance through the program.
Why Choose a Partial Hospitalization Program vs. Day Treatment?
When you first arrive at a treatment center, certified therapists will perform a complete assessment of your physical and mental health to determine the best form of treatment. Patients with co-occurring disorders or experiencing suicidal thoughts will start with a residential treatment program that gives them 24/7 care to help them begin their recovery journey.
A partial hospitalization program generally follows a residential program once patients demonstrate they are ready to return to their lives slowly and gradually. This is where the differences between partial hospitalization program vs. day treatment begin:
- PHP gives patients enough time to assimilate back into their lives over a 2-3 week period to avoid any relapse of symptoms or addiction triggers. They spend 6-8 hours a day in therapy while returning to their home or sober living community.
- Day Treatment follows a PHP program with patients continuing their therapy while gradually spending more time at home and work. They continue their therapy for 2-4 hours per day and gradually decrease the amount of time as their confidence grows.
- Each program includes group and individual therapy, where patients participate in behavioral and holistic therapies with their families and peers.
